Regular Meeting
May 16, 2019

The Supervisor called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m.

Present:  Supervisor Terry Nienhuis, Clerk Michael Dalman, Treasurer Vince Bush, and Trustees Doug Becker, Elliott Church, Russ TeSlaa and Norm Nykamp. Also present was Township Manager Steve Bulthuis.

Absent:  None

The Pledge of Allegiance was recited and Mr. TeSlaa gave the invocation.

Citizen’s Comments: None

19-56  A motion was made by Mr. Nykamp, supported by Mr. TeSlaa, to approve the consent agenda including communications, operational reports (Sgt. Converse’s report for April and Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department 2018 Annual Report), bills and financial transactions for April, and the minutes of the May 2, 2019 meeting as written.

All supported the motion
Motion declared adopted

The Board then heard an update on the Herrick District Library from Holland Charter Township appointees Priya Gurumurthy and Library Board President Cynthia Kleinheksel. Also in attendance was Herrick District Library Director Diane Kooiker.

The team gave a presentation and addressed Board member questions, specifically regarding statistical use of the library and plans for the northside branch located in Holland Township.

The next item on the agenda was the consideration of two appropriations recommended for approval by the Appropriations Committee. The organizations include Greater Ottawa County United Way – Recovery Fest ($500) and Zeeland Festivals Inc. – Pumpkinfest ($1000).  

19-57  Mr. Bush offered a resolution, supported by Mr. Becker, to approve appropriations in the amount of $1500 to Greater Ottawa County United Way – Recovery Fest and Zeeland Festivals Inc. - Pumpkinfest.

Mr. Nienhuis recognized three scouts from the Gilligan family who were in attendance as part of a merit badge requirement.

Mr. Bulthuis reviewed his informational report. Included was a request from Hope College researchers to study elevated levels of metals in fish in Lake Macatawa. Students would collect samples and study lead levels in fish. The Macatawa Area Coordinating Council asked if the Township would share in the cost of this study (estimated at $9700) as a municipality having shoreline. Mr. Bulthuis asked for input from Board members. Board members shared interest in the study if the study would give information on the impact on human health, and expressed it should be specified the Township will have no future commitment to solve any problems that may be discovered and would only consider funding one third of the study. Mr. Bulthuis will put this issue for consideration on a later agenda.

Board members shared committee reports. Mr. Nienhuis reminded the Board of the Fireman’s Banquet to be held on Monday, May 20.
